What is a favicon ?

What is a favicon ?
Do I need to use it ?
And if so, how the heck do I do it ?

Let's start with Do I need to use it:
No, you don't need to use it. We have published a favicon for you.
But you can change this to a custom one if you want.

And move onto to what is it:
When you use recent versions of Internet Explorer, Safari or Firefox and you are viewing a website, you sometimes see a picture along with the website title.
This picture is the website's favicon.

And then finally onto How do I do it:
Historically, the only real method to make a favicon was to learn how to use a graphics editor and dig in yourself.
Bio Builder makes that a bit easier for you.

When you are logged in to your site's editor.
Click on the "My Account" link in the red control strip and load any photograph you want.

BioBuilder has to shrink it down a lot to make it a valid size for a favicon.
If you don't like the look of it after the shrinking, try another photo.

One slighty weird thing about favicons and web browsers, is that your web browser (Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox etc) will "cache" (or save a copy of) the favicon to keep your surfing speed optimized.

So... after changing the favicon, you'll notice that your browser will sometimes still show the old favicon.

To make you browser show you the updated favicon, Click back onto "My Account" and hover your mouse over the blue Image icon.
Bio Builder will show you the new image down there near your mouse.
Your browser will now start showing you the new favicon image as soon as you move onto any other page in your site.

Why is it called a favicon ?
Well, way back when it was first introduced, a favicon was only used when you bookmarked the site (or added it to your favorites).
An icon for your favorites...
"FAV" from favorite and "ICON" from the word icon.
